1992
orthopaedic registrar - new zealand

auckland & middlemore hospitals (busiest trauma centre in the southern hemisphere). developed cultural and healthcare access insights through caring for the large maori and pacific islander community. acknowledged the treaty of waitangi as a requisite for employment.

successfully achieved fellowship of the royal australasian college of surgeons.

hand surgery fellowship - usa & france

world -leading indiana hand centre, Indianapolis and institut de la main, paris. paris program included belgian, italian, moroccan fellows. a cultural immersion experience - usa healthcare inequity first hand, french healthcare systems & a time spent in morocco with my moroccan co-fellow. 

1999-2008
orthopaedic surgeon. nsw hand society secretary. aoa training. educator - sydney 

sydney hospital hand unit (largest hand surgery unit in Australia) and st george hospital. set up first private practice at st george private hospital. aoa director of training and selector.

unsw senior lecturer appointment teaching medical students, junior doctors & orthopaedic trainees.

2009-2015
orthopaedic surgeon. educator - brisbane

moved to brisbane (spouse raaf pilot posting). set up second private practice at wesley hospital. engaged in medical student education - university of queensland, griffith & bond universities. established wesley upper limb radiology meetings. engaged in teaching of trainees via mri and journal club meetings. 

2016-present
orthopaedic surgeon. board member. advocate. educator - canberra 

move to canberra (spouse raaf posting). set up third private practice.  experience as board director at aoa, ioda & ahss. â€‹

 

2018-2020

australian orthopaedic association (aoa)

responsible for oversight of strategy, risk management & governance of the peak body for orthopaedic surgery. led & delivered the aoa inaugural diversity strategy. only 6% of australian orthopaedic surgeons are women. intake of women applying for orthopaedic training increased from ~12% to 25% over past 8 years. 

succesfully graduated from the aicd company director program. utilised these skills to  develop ioda and later to launch ahss strategy and elevate governance to aicd and acnc best practice.

international orthopaedic diversity alliance (ioda)

orthopaedics has the lowest inclusion of women & under-represented minorities globally. evidence shows significant inequity in orthopaedic healthcare delivery for more than 50% of the population.

  • 2020 - responsible for bringing together 45 orthopaedic leaders from 30 different nations to establish ioda as a usa nonprofit. 

  • ioda has ~2000 global members.

  • ioda is recognised by 45+ international orthopaedic associations who have signed the ioda charter - a commitment to improve equity in orthopaedic care.

  • developed and delivered collaborative webinars across all global regions

  • negotiated industry funding usd 125,000 annually through strong relationships with orthopaedic industry. 

  • developed governance processes, strategy, policy & responsible financial oversight

  • supported & developed relationships with orthopaedic association leaders across the globe.

  • developed board talent through mentorship & sponsorship

  • contibuted significantly to ioda website development and social media 

  • delivered invited presentations on healthcare inequity in orthopaedics in australia, denmark, hong kong, italy, malaysia, new zealand, portugal, united kingdom, usa & more.​​​

launched the first ahss strategic plan. developed governance structures, processes & policies. improved communications & visibility of all aspects of ahss activity - advocacy, board decisions, educational opportunities - locally, nationally & internationally and outreach volunteer work. increased membership engagement. developed relationships with state hand society boards and regional and international hand society leadership.
